CLIMB APSS 30-Hour State Certification Course

The Career Ladders in Mental and Behavioral Health (CLIMB-Health) is a Healthcare Workforce Collaborative (HWC) initiative focused on creating postsecondary pathways at KCTCS for individuals in recovery/reentry seeking entry-level employment as peer specialists. These include

  • Lived experience career pathways.
  • Peer specialist training.
  • Workforce development for mental and behavioral health employers.
  • Professional development for incumbent peer specialists.

The purpose of the program is to prepare individuals as paraprofessional adult peer specialists for entry-level employment in support of behavioral health treatment services. The course content is designed to familiarize students with the fundamentals of the recovery process, and the knowledge necessary to become state certified as Adult Peer Support Specialists (APSS). Our course is taught by instructors who are in recovery, actively working in the recovery industry, and have or are in pursuit of advanced degrees in social work and knowledge. This course is a 30 contact-hour course delivered completely online over two consecutive weekends.

    *Third-party funding for this course is available upon meeting program guidelines

Prerequisites:

  1. Be eighteen (18) years of age or older;
  2. Have a current or past diagnosis of a mental health, substance use, or co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders;
  3. Have received or be receiving treatment;
  4. Have a minimum educational requirement of a high school diploma or General Equivalence Diploma (GED) certificate;
  5. Demonstrate a pattern of recovery from mental health, substance use, or co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
