Placement Testing, Assessment, & Proctored Exams
In Fall 2001, the Kentucky Council on Post-secondary Education mandated placement assessment completion before admission into any state college. The purpose of this mandate was to better ensure student success in college through appropriate placement in basic academic skills courses (reading, writing, and mathematics).
All students planning to attend Madisonville Community College are required to take the TABE and KYOTE assessment unless ACT scores exempt them.
Minimum ACT Scores Required:
- English 18
- Reading 20
- Math 19
The ACT is a national test covering English, reading, math, and science with an optional writing component. To register online and find information about cost and testing sites visit: http://www.actstudent.org/regist/index.html.
TABE and KYOTE Assessments
The TABE and KYOTE assessments are computerized assessments covering reading, writing and math. Students may take the full assessment or any individual section in reading, writing or math.
Time Needed to Test:
- TABE: 60 minuntes per section for Reading and English
- KYOTE: untimed test
- Average testing time is 60 minutes
Cost for TABE and KYOTE Testing:
- First attempt is free.
- Additional attempts within four years are $10 per test section or $20 for the entire exam.

Proctored exams are examinations taken under the supervision of a proctor who verifies picture identification & monitors the exam period.
