Mine Emergency Response Academy (MERA)

Madisonville Community College, in partnership with the Kentucky Coal Academy, offers Mine Emergency Response Training to all mine operators in the Western Coal Fields. Training for Mine Rescue Teams and Mine Fire Brigades are offered.

MERA offers advanced training in the special techniques required for Mine Rescue Teams. The team members learn their skills using advanced classroom techniques then apply those skills at a fully equipped mine rescue station. MCC/Kentucky Coal Academy trained Mine Rescue Teams have won numerous competition awards including winning Overall Grand Champion at the 2010 KEMI meet.

MERA offers state-of-the-art training to coal miners on how to react to and extinguish fires erupting in the confined spaces of underground coal mines. MERA trains in an almost real mining environment that gives its students intense training in combating the types of fires that occur in mines.

MERA also offers its facilities to any fire department needing training in combating structure fires.
