MCC Offers Evening Welding Courses
Are you interested in learning or improving your welding skills? Madisonville Community College (MCC) will be offering two evening welding courses in the fall semester WLD 100 Oxy-Fuel Systems and WLD 101 Oxy-Fuel Systems Lab. Students successfully completing both courses will earn the Gas Welder certification and will have a working knowledge of oxy-fuel identification; set-up, inspection, and maintenance; consumable identification; selection and care; principles of operation; and effects of variables for manual and mechanized oxy-fuel cutting, welding, brazing principles and practices, and metallurgy. The lab course will provide skill training necessary to weld and cut plate and pipe in all positions, as well as brazing, braze welding, and gouging. Shop safety and equipment use are also covered.Enrollment in both courses is required. WLD 100 meets from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday followed by WLD 101 from 7-9 p.m. Classes begin August 20 and end December 12.
According to the Bureau for Labor Statistics, employment of welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers is expected to grow 15 percent from 2010 to 2020. Properly skilled welders with up-to-date training should have the best job prospects in a wide variety of industries, from car racing to manufacturing. The work that welders do and the equipment they use vary, depending on the industry.
