TVA SUPPORTS "GIRLS IN ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY" PROGRAM

Madisonville Community College (MCC) is pleased to announce that Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) continues to support the college s Girls in Engineering and Technology program. TVA representative Virginia Gray presented a check on January 25 in the amount of $5,000 to the program.

The Girls in Engineering and Technology program will serve approximately 400 sixth-grade girls in Hopkins County and over 200 in Muhlenberg County. Given information on several household appliances, participants will be asked to match each appliance with its wattage rating. They will validate their choices by taking resistance measurements using a meter and performing simple calculations based upon the measured resistance value. The activity will give participants an understanding of the relationship among resistance, voltage, current, and power as well as provide them with an awareness of the power consumption of appliances they encounter in their everyday life.

Students will also have the opportunity to meet with women who are already working in the industry or who are studying in science and technology fields in high school and college. The program provides hands-on experiences for these students to gain confidence and broaden their knowledge of career opportunities in the fields of math, science and technology, said Mike Davenport, Director of Workforce Solutions at MCC.
