Super Sunday Hall of Fame Alumni Honored

SUPER SUNDAY HALL OF FAME ALUMNI HONORED

Madisonville Community College (MCC) is proud to honor LaAsia Couch, Nicola Douglas, and Ashley Maypray as the newest members of the Super Sunday Hall of Fame.

Super Sunday is an annual Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) statewide initiative intended to increase the college-going rate of students of color. As part of this initiative, a Super Sunday Hall of Fame has been established, highlighting outstanding African-American alumni.

LaAsia Couch graduated from Madisonville Community College with Associates in Arts and Science in 2009. She was awarded the William C. Parker Scholarship for minorities at the University of Kentucky in 2010. With a passion for health and fitness, she declared a Kinesiology major in the College of Education. She is currently working towards a Master's Degree in Health Promotion. Her goal is to help develop and implement programs nationwide to educate children and adults on how to make better decisions and live healthier lifestyles. She is a life-long learner and hopes to receive a Ph.D. in the near future.

Nicola Douglas graduated from Madisonville Community College with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Business Administration and worked for Pennyrile Allied Community Services. Her passion was restaurant management, so in 2009 she began her career with Sonic Drive In. In less than one year, Nicola was able to move the local business from being in the red to making a profit. She attributes this success to her 14+ years of experience and her AAS degree knowledge. Nicola s business maintained a consistent growth until June 2012 when a fall at the restaurant left her with a broken arm and the discovery of stage 4 Multiple Myeloma bone cancer. While Nicola can no longer work in the fast food industry, she continues to use her degree knowledge to help with fundraising efforts for the Muhlenberg County Special Olympics. She serves as the Assistant Treasurer at her church and is also Co-Chairperson of the Education Ministry which provides scholarships and monetary assistance to students in their extra curriculum activities during school. Nicola continues to be a strong advocate on the importance of getting a college education.

Ashley Maypray graduated from Madisonville Community College with an Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees in December 2010. While enrolled at MCC, Ashley was a math tutor in the Student Support Services lab and served as a mentor for several younger students. She is employed as an LPN at Ridgewood Terrace Health amp; Rehabilitation Center.

On Sunday, February 23, MCC and each of the other 15 KCTCS colleges and System Office will partner with churches in their communities to host information fairs for prospective college students and their families. Madisonville Community College will sponsor Super Sunday College Fairs beginning at 2 p.m. on February 23 at the following locations:
Bethel Baptist Church, 205 Simmons Street, Drakesboro
Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 827 Westerfield Drive, Providence
Mt. Zion Baptist church, 108 Burton Lane, Earlington

MCC President Dr. Judith L. Rhoads shared that The Super Sunday College Fair will be an excellent opportunity for students to learn that college is affordable and accessible at MCC. We offer a number of outstanding academic programs that will prepare students for careers of the next century. We look forward to a big crowd at each location and will have admissions and financial aid staff available to help in any way possible.

For most Kentuckians, higher education begins at one of the state s 16 community and technical colleges. It is a vital part of the KCTCS mission to ensure the state s diverse populations receive every opportunity to obtain a college education.
