MCC WOMENS HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION FEATURES THE GIRLS IN THE BAND

Madisonville Community College will be hosting a special women s history month presentation with the screening of the feature documentary, The Girls in the Band. The event will be held on Monday, March 28, in the Byrnes Auditorium of the Hatley Building located on MCC s Health Sciences Campus (750 North Laffoon Street, Madisonville). A light reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the screening at 6 p.m. A panel discussion will be held at approximately 7:30 p.m.

The documentary tells the poignant, untold stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating, groundbreaking journeys from the late 30s to the present day. These incredibly talented women endured sexism, racism and diminished opportunities for decades, yet continued to persevere, inspire and elevate their talents in a field that seldom welcomed them. Today, there is a new breed of gifted young women taking their rightful place in the world of jazz, which can no longer deny their talents. More information about the documentary can be found online at http://thegirlsintheband.com/synopsis/.

The event is free and open to the public. For questions or additional information, contact MCC Music Professor Dr. Sara Adams at sara.adams@kctcs.edu.
