MCC Hosts Events to Honor Martin Luther King, Jr.

MADISONVILLE, Ky.--Madisonville Community College will host two community events to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The 26th annual community celebration honoring King will be held Saturday, January 15 at Byrnes Auditorium on the MCC health campus.

The celebration is sponsored by the Hopkins County Martin Luther King celebration committee and the MCC Martin Luther King scholarship committee.

The celebration will feature the Kentucky First Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ State Mass Choir of Louisville, directed by Lori Stallworth.

Special guests include the Nazarene Baptist Church Sanctuary Mass Choir of Evansville, Ind., directed by James Hamler, and the Bluegrass Chapter of the Gospel Music of America Mass Choir, directed by Bro. Robert Daughtry, with the Rev. Lonnie Williams of Earlington, Ky. as assistant choir representative. Nationally-known soloist Dr. Kandace Hinton of Terre Haute, Ind. will serve as the celebration host.

Special guest soloist for the event is international gospel music recording artist John Buell Edmonds of Bowling Green, Ky.

A love offering will be taken to support the MCC Martin Luther King, Jr. Minority Scholarship Fund. The Martin Luther King scholarship recipients for 2011 will be announced at the celebration.

On Tuesday, January 18, MCC will host a video presentation of King s I Have a Dream speech, followed by a presentation entitled A Look at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Then and Now given by Michael Lowery, a history teacher at Madisonville-North Hopkins High School.

Lowery participated in the August 28, 1963 March on Washington, where King gave his historic I Have a Dream speech.

The presentation is scheduled for 12:15 p.m.-1 p.m., in room 309 of the John H. Building on the North Campus. The public is invited to attend.
