MCC HOSTS EDWARD HUMES, AUTHOR OF GARBOLOGY: OUR DIRTY LOVE AFFAIR WITH TRASH

Pulitzer Prize author Edward Humes will be visiting the campus of Madisonville Community College (MCC) for presentations on March 22 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts. Community members are invited to attend this free event.

Humes is the author of Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash, the book selected for MCC s 2015-2016 Common Reader. The program is a campus-wide experience that unites students and faculty members in a year-long discussion about a single book across many different academic contexts. Students experience the book in a variety of courses, including English, math, science, history, and others, looking at the text in different frameworks and applying it to academic, personal, global, and social issues. This program reinforces the college s emphasis on reading as an integral component of academic success and the importance of collaboration and community among students and faculty members.

In Garbology, Humes investigates trash and reveals not just what we throw away, but who we are and where our society is headed. Waste is the one environmental and economic harm that ordinary working Americans have the power to change and prosper in the process.
