MCC Employees Receive Awards from Chamber of Commerce

MADISONVILLE, Ky Dr. Sara Adams, associate professor of music, and John Peters, director of advancement, were both honored with awards for their professionalism and community support at the Madisonville-Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce held January 19.

Adams received the Chamber s Postsecondary Educator of the Year award. She holds a doctorate in musicology from Florida State University.

Her students call her understanding, committed, enthusiastic, and approachable. They give her credit for making them eager to learn and giving them direction in life.

Outside the classroom, Adams has given solo performances in the Glema Mahr Chamber series. Her talent is well known and respected in this entire region. Recently she has been performed with the Owensboro Symphony Chorus.

Her professional performance and presence always surpasses expectations. In 2007, Adams was named director of the Madisonville Community College Singers. She directs a volunteer group of up to 100 singers in pop, classical, and religious choral music. Her gifts to this community will have a lasting impact in the arts and arts education.

Peters was named the Chamber s 2009 Volunteer of the Year.

He has been active with the Chamber s Golf Classic for the past 15 years, and served as a Chamber vice-chairman in 1998 and 1999.

Peters has also been active with the Hopkins County Education Foundation, Big Brothers- Big Sisters, and the Muhlenberg County Chamber of Commerce.

He has been employed at MCC since 1990, and started the college s advancement office in 1992. Since then, Peters has successfully directed two five-year gifts campaigns, Partners in Progress and Fulfilling the Promise.

These two campaigns have raised over $15.5 million collectively for MCC, and the college has ranked among the "top 25" two-year colleges nationally in cash giving in three academic years-1996, 2000, and 2007.
