Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Awards Announced

Madisonville Community College is pleased to announce the selection of Sylvia Chase and Mary Paris as the recipients of two $500 Martin Luther King Jr. scholarships. The awards were made during Hopkins County s 29th annual salute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on January 19, 2013. The M.L.K. Committee is proud to partner with the Community Improvement Foundation of Hopkins County to make these scholarships available. Education was an important part of Dr. King s dream and we re happy to be a part of keeping his dream alive, stated Tim Thomas, M.L.K. Program Chairman.

Sylvia Chase, of Earlington, is currently enrolled at Madisonville Community College (MCC) pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice with a certification in Law Enforcement. She is president of MCC s Multicultural Student Association, a member of the Multicultural Diversity Committee, a newly inducted member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, a member of Trio Student Support Services, and a student mentor. Upon graduation, Chase plans to transfer to Murray State University to further her degree in Criminal Justice.

Mary Paris, of Dawson Springs, is also currently enrolled at Madisonville Community College pursuing an Associate in Arts Degree. A foster parent for the past eighteen years, Paris works for the Training Resource Center for Murray State University and provides ongoing training for foster parents. She is also the liaison for Hopkins County foster and adoptive parents. She has served as president of the Pennyrile Foster/Adoptive Care Association and is currently the president of the Chi Etta Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and vice-president of MCC s Multicultural Student Association. Upon graduation, Paris plans to continue her studies by pursuing a degree in counseling. She loves people and wants to continue serving them and making a difference in her community.
