LAVENDER FUND II SCHOLARSHIP CHALLENGE GIFT OPPORTUNITY

Madisonville Community College recently received a challenge gift from an anonymous donor to support the Lavender Fund II Scholarship. Hoping to enlist the support of community members, area civic clubs, and businesses, the benefactor has agreed to provide a dollar-for-dollar match up to $5,000 to provide scholarships for MCC students.

The Lavender Fund II Scholarship is a unique scholarship and support program for single parents attending MCC. Realizing that success in college while managing a household can be a tremendous challenge, this scholarship is intended to remove barriers by providing additional resources single parents may need. In addition to financial assistance, Lavender Fund Scholars have access to a support advisor who provides life skills workshops, academic and career guidance, and personal assistance.

Lisa Ferrell and Jennifer Brainard are two of the Lavender Fund II Scholarship recipients for 2016. Ferrell, a student in the MCC Business Administration program, shared, I am so grateful for the Lavender Fund. Because of the extra money, I will be able to pay for my summer classes and stay on course to complete my degree. It has relieved a financial burden while allowing me to accomplish my goals as a student.

The Lavender Fund Scholarships allow us to provide financial and personal support for students who are faced with the demands of a being a single parent, combined with the challenges of being a college student. This program is making a huge difference in the lives of our students, noted MCC Director of Advancement Chris Woodall. As of the Spring 2016 semester, nearly 60 students have received Lavender Fund Scholarships.
