Girls in Engineering Technology Programs Scheduled
MCC s Workforce Solutions Department will be hosting Girls in Engineering and Technology on the following dates for 6th grade students in Hopkins County:
- March 21 - South Hopkins Middle School students
- April 11 - James Madison Middle School students
- April 25 - Browning Springs Middle School students
For students in Muhlenberg County, the "Girls in Engineering and Technology" program will be held on:
- March 26 - Muhlenberg South Middle School students
- March 27 - Muhlenberg North Middle School students
Each events will be held from 9 a.m. until 12N at Muhlenberg South Middle School.
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) funded program is for 6th grade girls and simulates
the energy production process from the Western Kentucky coal mines to the TVA Power
Plant to the households and businesses in our area. Students are asked to construct
a pipeline from the mines to TVA Paradise Plant with the end result being to light
model homes and schools. Throughout this project, students use math and engineer-related
skills to draft a plan, purchase needed materials within a budget, work as a team
to overcome physical obstacles, and ultimately power a generator that tests the success
of their efforts. Before and after the simulation, nontraditional careers are highlighted
by women who were already working in the field or who were studying at the high school
and college level.
Girls in Engineering and Technology targets 6th grade girls at a time when they have
to make crucial math and science scheduling decisions for high school, shared Kristy
Quinn of MCC s Workforce Solutions. The program has been funded by TVA for the past
seven years and serves approximately 450 participants in the Muhlenberg and Hopkins
counties each year.
