EMT Dual Credit Class Offered in Spring Semester

EMT DUAL CREDIT CLASS OFFERED IN SPRING SEMESTER

Webster County High School and Webster County Area Technology Center senior students will soon have the opportunity to enroll in a dual credit Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course. Madisonville Community College (MCC) will be offering the 6 credit hour FRS 2061 - Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course in its spring 2014 semester. The course will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-9 p.m. beginning January 13 on MCC s Health Sciences Campus (750 North Laffoon Street in Madisonville). The dual credit course offers considerable savings for the students. Per the dual credit agreements, the $864 tuition charge will be waived and the $50 dual credit registration fee will be paid through grant funding from the Webster County Fiscal Court. Assistance of up to $150 will be provided for the required textbooks.

MCC s Emergency Medical Services/Paramedic Program Coordinator Tim Martin states, The college and the two local schools are very excited about this opportunity which prepares students for the national examination required to become an EMT. I hope that students will also consider going on to be part of the paramedical program at the college that will prepare them for an exciting career in that field.

The EMT course will cover all knowledge aspects of trauma care as outlined by national standards considered to be the responsibilities of ambulance operations. It involves typical anatomy and physiology, patient assessment, care for respiratory and cardiac emergencies, control of bleeding, application of dressing and bandages, treatment for traumatic shock, care for fractures/ dislocation/sprains and strains, medical emergencies, emergency childbirth, burns/heat emergencies, environmental emergencies, principles of vehicle rescue, transportation of patients, and general operations of ambulance systems.
