SUMMER YOUTH COLLEGE 2014 REGISTRATION UNDERWAY

Madisonville Community College s Summer Youth College 2014 will be held July 14-17 and registration is currently in progress. Classes will meet from 8:30 a.m. 12N each day in the Brown Badgett, Sr. Energy amp; Advanced Technology Center on MCC s North Campus (2000 College Drive, Madisonville). We have seen a tremendous interest in this program every year. The participants learn while having fun. Our teachers and volunteers are wonderful and the kids enjoy being on campus. We love being able to provide this opportunity for them and offer classes that interest them. We are expecting a great turn-out this year, shared Brianna Pantano, Continuing Education Coordinator in MCC s Workforce Solutions department.

Summer Youth College 2014 is for students entering the 1st through 6th grades in the fall. Classes that will challenge the mind and stretch the imagination are planned and participants can select one class from each of the following choices:

Choice One:

Oodles and Oodles of Doodles by Dawn Moore What do George Washington, Thomas Edison, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Gates all have in common? They are Doodlers! Learn decorative doodling, awesome alphabets, and patterns to create one of a kind art. Use watercolors to make them come to life!

Calling All Photographers by Kristin Hall Come learn the basics of photography and a few tricks of the trade! You will get to experiment with portrait, landscape, and action shots and learn fun ways to make your photos stand out! By the end of class you will create a scrapbook full of your own unique pictures!

Choice Two:

Exploring My World by Sharon Hendricks Using Nystrom Interactive Globes and Maps, students will explore their world! They will use dry erase maps and globes to learn basic geography, the parts of maps, and understand uses of a variety of maps. Come have fun exploring the world with us!

Me, You, amp; Them: Cultural Passport by Scott Moore From Down Under to the Highlands of Scotland, let s journey through Australia, West Africa, Scotland and back to the Great Plains of America! We will learn the customs of each area through art, literature, music and dance!

Choice Three:

Becoming an All Star: Cookie Decorating by Glenn Riggs Your Cookie Coach will help you learn how to decorate cookies in their sports themed class. Show your team spirit as you decorate a jersey and a pennant cookie and more! You will have a ball learning how to decorate cookies!

SYC Adventures by Donna Hendricks Are you ready to face the alligator swamp? Fight off deadly spiders? Walk across quicksand? Meet Bigfoot face to face? Get Ready! In this course, you will work with your friends to meet these team challenges. Experience the thrill of success as you complete these obstacles with your new friends!

Participants will attend three classes that meet one hour each day and will be grouped into classes customized for their grade level (grades 1-2; grades 3-4; and grades 5-6). The registration fee of $87 includes 3 action-packed classes, classroom supplies, snacks, and a Summer Youth College 2014 t-shirt. A limited number of Summer Youth College scholarships are available.
