MCC AND MARTIN FOUNDATION PARTNERING WITH ADULT STUDENTS TO COMPLETE ASSOCIATE DEGREESMuhlenberg County leaders have worked hard in the past two decades to provide county residents with greater opportunities for career advancement. These efforts are paying off for the county with state recognition as a Work Ready Community in Progress county. To keep that recognition, the county will need to redouble its efforts to meet state guidelines for the percent of residents with at least a two-year degree.
Dedicated to the advancement of Muhlenberg County, the Felix E. Martin, Jr. Foundation and Madisonville Community College (MCC) are working together in a variety of efforts to assist students in the completion of their degree programs. Kathy Jacobi, president of the foundation, says: MCC and the Foundation want to help adult students who have some college to return and complete their two-year education through the creation of the Martin Scholars Program. Muhlenberg County residents who are 22 years or older, have completed at least 30 credit hours of college-level course work, and were not enrolled in the spring term may qualify. Qualifying students are eligible for a $250 cash stipend each semester they make satisfactory progress toward an MCC degree and a $400 bonus when they complete their degree.
The Martins Scholar Program assistance is independent of any other financial aid that students may receive at MCC. An open house is scheduled for persons interested in the Martins Scholar program on Thursday, July 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the MCC Muhlenberg County Campus.
In addition, MCC has $700 scholarship opportunities for Muhlenberg County residents who are completing their degree programs in nursing or allied health on the Health Sciences Campus at Madisonville. Dr. Judith Rhoads, MCC president, explains that Muhlenberg County donors have been generous in the past with fund raising for the Muhlenberg County Campus and for providing scholarship opportunities for young people in the county. MCC is committed to working with them to achieve their career goals by making it financially possible for them to complete college.
