Ready to Work FAQs

What types of jobs are available to Ready to Work students?

Students are preferably placed in a job within their field of study according to job skills and work experience. Students are given a career assessment and provided career counseling to help them decide what career goal is best for them.

Work study placements can be either on-campus or off-campus. On-campus placements are limited and are shared with the Federal Work Study program. Off-campus placements are within the non-profit sector and private-sector alike.

What is the job placement process?

After completing the enrollment process, an interview is scheduled at an agreed upon workplace with the Work Study Supervisor on site. This is an actual interview and should be considered as such by the student, thus he/she should be appropriately dressed for an interview. Once the interview has been completed, it is determined whether the student is an appropriate match for the work study position. If not, an interview with another placement is scheduled.

How many hours can I work per week?

The Ready to Work program pays the participant federal minimum wage for 20 hours per week to meet K-TAP work requirements.

How will I be paid?

As a student worker in the Ready to Work program, students are paid by KCTCS. KCTCS issues payroll by electronic direct deposit into the student s savings or checking account. Student workers may print their own paycheck information from the employee self-service feature.

What does KCTCS require to become a work-study participant?

Potential student workers must first pass a criminal background check. Once this is received, students must complete payroll forms that are required by the Human Resources department. The Ready to Work coordinator will help you with all of the necessary paperwork.

How many college classes must I take in order to participate in RTW?

Students must be enrolled in at least one (1) KCTCS class. Preferably, students will be enrolled in at least two (2) classes in order to make steady progress toward earning their degree. The Ready to Work coordinator and the student s academic advisor will work closely with the student to set up a class schedule that is right for them.

Are you an employer who is willing to place candidates from the Ready to Work program? In order to participate, you must:

Provide legitimate work experience. Though they do provide valuable experience, restaurants, convenience / department stores, etc. are not considered as potential employers. Job duties such as custodial work , food preparation, gardening, etc. are also unacceptable.
Complete necessary application forms. Students and employers must complete initial work-study forms, including a job description and an off-campus agreement (if applicable).
Complete bi-monthly payroll forms. Students are require to track their hours and report those to the Ready to Work office. Employers must be willing to monitor these hours and sign students' payroll forms. Unsigned forms will not be accepted and hours will be periodically verified by the Ready to Work office.
Be willing to work around student schedule. The Ready to Work work-study component is a supplement to student income and is considered secondary to academic study. Therefore, employers are expected to schedule work hours around the student worker's classroom time.
