SENIOR CITIZENS INVITED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FREE TUITION

SENIOR CITIZENS INVITED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FREE TUITION FOR COURSES AT MUHLENBERG CAMPUS OF MADISONVILLE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Community colleges exist not only to offer courses for recent high school graduates and adult students wishing to return to college to advance their career opportunities but also to offer lifelong learning. George Humphreys, campus director at the Muhlenberg County Campus of Madisonville Community College, says, Muhlenberg County senior citizens are encouraged to take advantage of the statewide Donovan Scholars program that waives tuition for classes that they take. To qualify, persons must be 65 or over and be a Kentucky resident.

The Muhlenberg County Campus offers a number of classes that might interest area seniors on its spring schedule, including:

Introduction to Comparative Religion (ANT or REL 130) meets 6-8:45 p.m. on Monday evenings;

Two history classes are also featured on the evening schedule meeting from 6-8:45 p.m. U.S. History through 1865 (HIS 108) meets Thursday and Modern European History (HIS 105) meets on Tuesday. Modern American History (HIS 109) also is offered during the day from 1-2:15 p.m. on Monday/Wednesday;

For those interested in science, there are several outstanding choices. Human Ecology (BIO 120) explores mankind s relationship with the environment on a number of issues such as biodiversity, conservation and sustainability of natural resources, and coping with biological threats, including pandemics. This class meets 6-8:45 p.m. on Wednesday. For those interested in learning more about the universe, Solar System (AST 192) meets 2:30-3:45 p.m. on Tuesday/Thursday and Stars, Galaxies and the Universe meets 6:15-8:45 p.m. on Tuesday;

Finally, several communications classes are on the spring schedule. Basic Public Speaking (COM 181) is scheduled for 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. on Monday/Wednesday and Introduction to Interpersonal Communications (COM 252) will meet 1-2:15 p.m. on Tuesday/Thursday.
