OCTAVIA LAWRENCE AWARDED NACADA SUMMER INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIP

Octavia Lawrence of Madisonville Community College has been awarded the Wesley R. Habley National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Summer Institute Scholarship. The award honors Lawrence for her contributions to the improvement of academic advising. As an academic advisor in the college s Enrollment Center, she assists with general advising in addition to working closely with at-risk students through self-assessment tools, goal setting, and follow-up throughout the semester to ensure their success.

Lawrence will be attending the 2014 NACADA Summer Institute in Portland, Oregon, on June 22-27. The scholarship covers the registration fee and all Institute sessions and activities. The Summer Institute experience is based on a week-long program that will provide Lawrence the opportunity to develop a customized Action Plan based on advising needs at the college. This process will be facilitated by attendance at Foundation Sessions, a choice of topical and workshop sessions, and working daily with a summer institute faculty member and a small group of participants from similar institutional types. A team of expert faculty from institutions such as University of Texas Austin, United States Air Force Academy, Temple University, Washington State University, and others will bring together a wide variety of advising and administrative experiences.

Lawrence resides in Providence with her daughters, Kaylynn and Laila.
