Local Endowment Established in Memory of Rebecca "Becky" Hicklin

When Becky Hicklin passed away in March 2011, she left behind a family who loved her and many friends who had enjoyed her company for years. Becky also left a legacy of professional service to her community -- serving for 33 years as a nurse for the Hopkins County Health Department, with 13 of those years as the school nurse at West Hopkins Accelerated School in Rabbit Ridge.

Becky s two children, Katy (and her husband Dustin) of Staunton, Virginia, SGT M.T. Hicklin of Camp Pendleton, California, along with her husband of 35 years Melvin D. Hicklin, owner of Madisonville s Hicklin Real Estate, thought enough of Becky that they have collectively established a local scholarship in Becky s name. In partnership with Madisonville Community College, and through local donations provided by friends, work colleagues, and family members, the Hicklins have established the Becky D. Hicklin Nursing Scholarship. This permanent endowment is reserved to support a second year MCC nursing student with a minimum annual award of $700 annually. The recipient will be a Hopkins County resident and possibly from the West Hopkins School area, where Becky worked for much of her professional life.

Becky Bishop Hicklin grew up on a farm in White Plains and graduated from South Hopkins High School in 1974. She earned her nursing degree from Western Kentucky University, and the Hicklin family wanted to make sure that her life s work would, in some way, help others realize a successful career. According to Melvin, Katy, MT, and I are pleased to be able to be a part of what has become the Becky D. Hicklin Nursing Scholarship. Becky s career in nursing had a positive effect on many lives and our hope is that this scholarship will enable others to follow in her path. We would like to thank all those who have made the commitment to donate to this fund.

MCC s Advancement Office plans to make the first Hicklin scholarship award in spring 2012. For specific application information, contact John Peters at (270) 824-8593, or email at john.peters@kctcs.edu.
