KCA/MCC MINE RESCUE TEAM COMPETITION RESULTS ANNOUNCED
The Kentucky Coal Academy s Madisonville Community College (MCC) Mine Rescue Team was one of 35 teams from nine states to compete in the Kentucky Mining Institute (KMI) 2015 Kentucky State Safety Competition held in Lexington on August 18-21.MCC Mine Rescue Team member David Mackey, of Ken America Paradise Mine, finished 4th out of 47 individuals in the Pre-Shift Competition. Mackey received the pre-shift traveling trophy for being the top Kentucky finisher. Team member Taber Tichenor, of the Armstrong Coal Kronos Mine, finished 5th out of 43 benchmen in the Bench Biopak 240R Competition.
The University of Kentucky Department of Mining Engineering coordinated the event, which brings together coal miners, industry personnel, and officials from the Kentucky Division of Mine Safety and the Mine Safety and Health Administration to simulate an actual underground mine disaster. This provides rescue teams with an opportunity to practice preparedness skills that would be needed in the event of an actual mine emergency.
The MCC Mine Rescue Team, composed of individuals working in the western Kentucky area coal mines, is competing at the National Mine Rescue Contest on September 14-17 in Lexington.
