CENTRAL CITY, Ky. Betsy Allen, English instructor at the Muhlenberg County Campus of Madisonville Community College, will deliver a presentation on her innovative teaching strategy at the February 27 meeting of the Southeast Chapter of the Two-Year College Association.
The title of her presentation is Cause and Effect Essays and Choose Your Own Adventure Books: How Interactive Texts Can Enhance an Otherwise Overdone Assignment.
Allen will discuss the benefits her students have derived from use of the Choose Your Adventure series for cause and effect papers in her Writing I classes. The Choose Your Own Adventure book series has been popular among students for decades. In these books, students can choose their own plot and outcomes by turning to different areas in the book when prompted.
Younger students like using these books very much as they are given considerable plot development for them to complete, said Allen. And older students enjoy the class because they remember reading books from the series when they or their children were in school.
Allen is from Athens, Tenn. and now lives in Central City. She taught English at Lees McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C. prior to arriving at MCC.
Dr. Judith Rhoads, president of MCC, is enthusiastic about Betsy s addition to the Muhlenberg County Campus and MCC.
Betsy Allen is such a positive person and student focused, said Rhoads. We are very lucky to have her on the faculty. The fact that 13 students registered for her creative writing class this semester tells me that they are really connecting with her.
