Madisonville Community College (MCC) joins healthcare technology professionals from across the country in observing Healthcare Technology Management Week, May 19–25, 2013. This annual celebration is sponsored by the Technology Management Council of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation. These healthcare professionals are responsible for servicing, maintaining, and managing healthcare technologies for hospitals and other healthcare facilities, manufacturers, and third-party service organizations around the world. Skilled technicians help acquire, install, maintain, and train healthcare personnel on cutting-edge medical technology. They also support medical staff in the use of the technology.

MCC’s Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) program is the only public, non-profit program of its type in the state of Kentucky and only one of 74 across the nation. Classes are offered online and lab sessions are scheduled for only one day each week. The HTM program is designed for the serious adult learner who desires a rewarding and stable life-long career as a Healthcare Technology Management professional. The curriculum focuses on repairing, maintaining, and managing a wide variety of medical devices, equipment, and systems. The learner will gain a holistic perspective of the life-cycle duties and skills needed to assure that medical devices meet safety and performance expectations. The program also addresses both general and specialized medical technologies along with how these technologies are interfaced with health networks. IT related content will adequately prepare the student to meet the expectations of employers.

Mary Reynolds, a recent HTM graduate of Madisonville Community College now residing in Nashville, Tennessee, shared, “When the position I held in manufacturing for 25 years was outsourced, I was very distraught, I was already 43 years old and had no idea what employment opportunities were available to me. I considered several positions before deciding to further my education. I went to MCC and went over the areas of study they had available along with the number of students currently enrolled in each. I knew I didn't want to move into an area that was heavily saturated with potential competition. I was told about the HTM program, the classes were small but the curriculum seemed very difficult. I enrolled in the program and that was all it took for me to be "hooked". I loved the program and I loved the idea of being in healthcare without being in direct patient contact. It only took me four months to find a position and I have had that position for five years. The Healthcare Technology Management field is growing by leaps and bounds and it is a vital part of healthcare that most people don't even know exist. I love my job and I learn more every day!”

Madisonville Community College (MCC) is excited to announce that the GED® test will be free to Kentucky residents until July 31, 2013. Those testing during this timeframe will have the usual test fee of $60 waived courtesy of the Kentucky Adult Education, a unit of the Council on Postsecondary Education. The GED® test provides adults who did not finish high school with the opportunity to certify their attainment of high school-level academic knowledge and skills.

Cris Crowley, MCC’s Director of Adult Education, strongly encourages anyone interested in obtaining his/her GED® certification to take advantage of this opportunity to test for free. In addition to free GED® testing, there are also free GED® classes to prepare individuals for successful testing. MCC’s ACE2 program offers adult learner services at multiple locations in Hopkins and Muhlenberg counties. These locations include:
• ACE2, 100 School Avenue, Madisonville
• Parkway Plaza Mall (between Hibbett Sporting Goods and Maurice’s), Madisonville
• White Plains Senior Citizens Center
• St. Charles Fire Department
• Muhlenberg County Career Advancement Center

Crowley also wants all current and future GED® students to be aware of upcoming changes. The current GED® test version (2002 series) will expire on December 31, 2013 and will be replaced with the new computer-based 2014 GED® test. The fee for the 2014 GED® test is set at $120. Individuals who have taken the 2002 Series GED® test but have not passed all five parts have until December 18 to complete the test before their scores are expired.

In response to a growing demand from students interested in pursuing their college goals while fitting their course schedules around work and other demands, Madisonville Community College (MCC) has expanded its on-line course offerings and programs for the fall semester. A listing of fully accredited courses in general education and many program areas can be found in the MCC class schedule located at www.madisonville.kctcs.edu. To locate all of the online course offerings, change the format search to “Internet.”

Dr. Deborah Cox, MCC Chief Academic Officer, encourages students who may find pursuing a college degree difficult for reasons of geography or competing demands on their time to take advantage of the on-line experience. “MCC is proud of the quality and variety of on-line experiences it has to offer students in this region. This college has always been recognized for its exceptional variety of career programs leading to well-paying employment, and the on-line programs that we have to offer make these more accessible to the students in our area.” MCC has been recognized as one of the top community colleges in the nation for the past two years by the Aspen Institute and tuition cost is the lowest in the state.

The college currently offers three fully on-line programs for students interested in challenging associate degree professional careers related to paralegal technology, human services, and energy management. Students interested in these programs can contact Aimee Wilkerson at aimee.wilkerson@kctcs.edu or at (270) 824-8696 to register for one of the MCC on-line programs or to request additional information about what MCC has to offer students interested in on-line courses.

MCC Hosts 8th Grade Mathematics Competition

RESULTS OF 8TH GRADE MATH CONTEST ANNOUNCED

On Tuesday, April 23rd, Hopkins County Central High School TRIO Talent Search participants toured Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee. Upon arrival to APSU, the students attended an admission session where they learned about various aspects of the university, including housing, meal plans, and student organizations. The students also learned about two postsecondary TRIO programs offered at APSU: Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) and Student Support Services (SSS).

The Madisonville Community College TRiO program serves Hopkins, Muhlenberg and Crittenden counties. J’Nora Anderson is the TRiO Talent Search advisor at Hopkins County Central who arranged this college visit for the participants. Other TRIO Talent Search staff include Anna Leasure, Director, Wes Ausenbaugh, Corey Downey, Advisors, and Marcia Evans, Administrative Advisor. Offices are located in the John H. Gray Building on the Madisonville Community College North Campus.

Once on the tour, the students received an “up close and personal” view of the APSU campus. This included visits to the Foy Athletic Center and the newly-built student housing complex, which included a tour of a typical two-person dorm room. The group also visited various classroom buildings on campus, including the Morgan University Center and the science building. This college visit and other TRIO Talent Search services provide participants with information to assist participants in making a wise choice for their college studies that best fits their academic interests and personal needs.
MCC Announces Online Dual Credit Opportunities

MCC ANNOUNCES ON-LINE DUAL CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES

Beginning this fall, Madisonville Community College (MCC), through it Pathways to College program, will offer high school students with qualifying ACT scores the opportunity to select from the college’s extensive list of on-line courses to earn dual credit. Students taking advantage of this opportunity will earn high school and college credit for completion of the college course. The tuition for these courses will be reduced 50% to approximately $216 for a typical 3 credit hour class. Students will be expected to purchase the required course textbook.

MCC President Dr. Judith Rhoads notes, “MCC continues to expand ways that high school students in the region can challenge themselves by taking rigorous college classes while in high school. This benefits them by getting an early start on college, providing a more effective transition from high school to college, and saving college costs.”

Student success in any on-line class is largely dependent on the maturity of the student. This concern will be addressed through a partnership with participating high schools which will provide instructional support for their students. Dr. Deborah Cox, MCC Chief Academic Affairs Officer, explains that “we want to offer these students a hybrid approach involving high school personnel support to make certain students are keeping up in their courses and helping with the logistical issues that can arise in any on-line class. This will involve students reporting to their library or other designated location at the high school on a regular basis.”

Classes offered will include an extensive variety of courses in the humanities, math and natural sciences, and the social sciences. Students or parents interested in this opportunity should contact the high school guidance offices. They also may contact George Humphreys, MCC Extended Campus Director, at (270) 824-1723 or george.humphreys@kctcs.edu.

Muhlenberg County area citizens can now take advantage of expanded higher education opportunities offered by Madisonville Community College (MCC) for the fall 2013 semester. According to Dr. Deborah Cox, MCC’s Chief Academic Officer, “The MCC fall schedule continues to offer Muhlenberg residents nearly 60 in-person courses at the Muhlenberg County Campus in Central City, but they also can benefit by a greatly expanded variety of MCC courses taught online in a variety of academic areas that takes accessibility and convenience to an entirely new level.”

The fall schedule is available on the MCC’s web site, www.madisonville.kctcs.edu. The schedule can be filtered to find all the in-person courses at the Muhlenberg County Campus or to view those taught on line.

George Humphreys, Muhlenberg County Campus Director, says, “Muhlenberg area students are able to take their basic general education courses for a transfer associate degree or for one of the more than 20 career programs at Madisonville Community College.” He adds, “Madisonville Community College is among the leaders in the Kentucky Community and Technology College System in terms of the variety of programs that its students can choose from leading to high paying careers, and the number of these continues to grow.”
Within recent years, MCC has added on-line programs in energy management, human services, and paralegal services, as well as new programs in healthcare technology management and paramedic technology.

The fall Muhlenberg County Campus schedule features several classes that prepare students for one of the college’s programs or, upon successful completion of the class and industry examination, for employment. These include the NAA 100 - Skilled Nursing Assistant I and FRS 2061 - Emergency Medical Assistant.

Fall classes begin August 19, but new students should make plans to apply as soon as possible. Penny Jessup, Student Affairs Specialist at the Muhlenberg County Campus explains that “students who start early can be sure that they have ample time to apply for financial aid programs, schedule for their required first semester experience orientation sessions, and arrange their schedules to suit their personal needs.

Madisonville Community College (MCC) hosted the Kentucky Coal Academy (KCA) Mine Rescue Contest on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at its Mine Emergency Response Academy (MERA) located at 150 School Avenue in Madisonville. Nine teams representing Alliance, Peabody Midwest Mining, and Prosperity Mining participated in the contest. “The MCC/KCA skills contest is unique because it provides hands-on training skills for mine rescue teams. The facilities at MCC are equipped with an underground mine simulator that can hold a live burn and smoke simulation in almost real mine conditions. Mine rescue team members love the “work and train” hands-on method with their equipment,” stated Danny Knott, MCC Mine Rescue Training Director.

Competition events included mine rescue emergency scenario, firefighting, smoke, fire hose management, first aid, written tests, gas instruments calibration, and breathing apparatus test. Rick Caskey of MCC’s Mine Fire Brigade program noted, “Even though the rain fell during the contest, it did not dampen the spirit of competition. Every team displayed a concerted effort to complete the task at hand, some to the point of exhaustion. Camaraderie still rules in the mining community.”

Awards were presented to:
• 1st Place – Peabody Midwest Mining Francisco Mine – Captain Matt Kamman
• 2nd Place – Alliance Coal Gibson Co. Mine Rescue Rhinos – Captain Zack Brown
• 3rd Place – Alliance Coal Riverview Mine – Captain John Tow

MCC is pleased to announce that the course schedule for the summer 2013 semester has been established and registration is currently underway. Mathematics and nursing assistant skills courses will be offered at the MCC Muhlenberg County Campus. Nursing Assistant Skills I (NAA100) is scheduled for June 11-July 22. For persons considering the nursing career track, NAA100 is a required pre-requisite for MCC nursing program admission. Also, successful completion of the course and passing the state examination may result in certification to work as a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) in long-term care or other health care facilities.

The Muhlenberg County Campus schedule also features several math courses. For those needing to improve their math skills, Intermediate Algebra (MAT185), will be offered during the second session starting June 11. College Algebra (MAT 150) is offered during Intersession starting May 14 and ending June 10.

MCC’s summer schedule features expanded online course offerings ranging from accounting to sociology and including general education classes like biology, communications, and English. “Students taking our local online classes get the best of both worlds,” according to Deborah Cox, MCC’s Chief Academic Officer. “Students get the convenience of online learning with faculty available to meet with them locally if they have questions”.

MCC’s website (www.madisonville.kctcs.edu/schedule) contains the class schedule information as well as detailed information regarding registration and admission requirements, the MCC academic calendar, tuition, books, and more. In addition, persons may filter the class schedule to view only the classes they are interested in taking and print the information if desired.

Summer classes begin May 14th (intersession) and June 10th (summer session); fall classes begin August 19th. MCC, part of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, offers the lowest tuition rates in the state. Persons interested in further information about MCC classes may contact Penny Jessup, Student Affairs Specialist at the Muhlenberg County Campus at (270) 757-9881 or visit her Monday through Friday before 4 p.m.

TRiO Talent Search Hosts "March Madness"

MCC’s TRiO Talent Search Hosts “March Madness”

With college basketball tournament season in full swing, Madisonville Community College (MCC) played host to over 200 TRiO Talent Search Middle School students for a day of fun and learning. “March Madness 2013” brought 6th-8th grade students from Crittenden, Hopkins and Muhlenberg counties to campus to hear from MCC personnel about the world of possibilities available to people who earn a college degree. Middle schools represented were Browning Springs, James Madison, South Hopkins, West Hopkins School, Muhlenberg North, Muhlenberg South, and Crittenden County.

Upon arrival at MCC, students were divided into teams and given gear in their teams’ colors that they could proudly wear around campus. From there, they set off to the first of three sessions to learn about subjects such as how the college financial aid process works, what a radiographer does, how foreign language opens doors to careers at home and abroad, the way math factors into many different career fields (even sports), and what a career in biology or ecology could mean for them. Instructors included: Sharie Davis and Stacie Gary (Bracket Probability); Katrina Florea (Origami); Patricia Fouse and Dianne Jernigan (Clase de Espanola Baloncesto Locura de Marzo); MCC Radiography Students Penny Berry, Helen Diuguid, and Stacey Ferrell (X-ray Vision); Casey Johnson (Money Madness); Octavia Lawrence (College/University ~ PREZI); Lisa Miller (Breathe Your Best); Dr. Mike Shifflett and Dr. Aseem Talukdar (The Night Sky); Pam Smith (Environmental Study/Biology Careers); Randy Wolfe and Tom Hughes (Mining Simulation). Each team had a different journey!

After teams completed their sessions, they joined their competitors to share lunchtime as a group, mingling among other schools and meeting new friends. Each team had a Guide (many of whom were current or former Talent Search participants) who led them from place to place and awarded points for things such as asking good questions, being respectful, and playing to win. Each guide was also on the lookout for his or her team MVP. At the end of the day, after they had calculated teams’ point totals, Talent Search staff presented trophies and medals to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams. First place went to James Madison Middle School’s black team, second place went to West Hopkins’ navy blue team, and the third place winner was Browning Springs’ tan team.

Each team had a MVP that received special recognition along with a Murray State University t-shirt. All Talent Search students conducted themselves with maturity and showed great willingness to learn. It was a “March Madness” to remember!

Madisonville Community College (MCC) is pleased to announce that Tsering Phuntsok will be visiting the college on Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Invited by Tulane University and Hopkinsville Community College to the United States, Tsering has traveled far from his home in Dharamsala, India, to share his message of compassion according to the teachings of Buddha. He will visit classes and have a presentation open to the community as well as MCC students and employees at 12:15 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room on the first floor of the John H. Gray building (North Campus, 2000 College Drive, Madisonville).

Since entering the Palyul Choekhorling Nyingmapa monastery in Bir, India, in 1987 at age 16, Tsering Phuntsok has been a practicing Buddhist monk. For the first 17 years he studied and practiced in the Nyingmapa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, receiving training in meditation, Buddhist scripture and philosophy, tantric ritual, lama dancing and music. For several years he trained young monks in ritual and academic subjects. He has received many tantric empowerments and sutra teachings from His Holiness the Dalai Lama and many other High Lamas, including H.H. Penor Rinpoche. In the last several years he has worked on health related projects for his monastery as well as overseeing his nieces and nephews.

Tsering makes his residence in Dharamsala, India in the foothills of the Himalayas; his home is less than a minute walk from the Temple and residence of the H. H. Dalai Lama. Currently he facilitates cultural exchange programs between the Tibetan community and US university students who come to Dharamsala to volunteer with LHA, a local social work agency devoted to improving the lives of Tibetan refugees and local Indians. These groups also learn about Buddhism through visits to Tibetan monasteries. A soft-spoken man, with a quiet and engaging energy and humor, his goal is to practice and explain Buddhist dharma in a way that will help to alleviate suffering and speak to each hearer in a way suited to his or her own level of development.

MCC is pleased to present to the community this opportunity to learn about a diverse culture of the world. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at 12:15 p.m. and join us for an interesting and informative visit with Tsering.
The program is specifically designed to encourage adult students in Muhlenberg County with at least 30 college credit hours to complete their associate’s degree at Madisonville Community College. The intent is to increase the educational attainment level in Muhlenberg County, which will not only benefit graduates, but will also raise the profile of Muhlenberg County as a Work Ready Community and act as a catalyst for economic development efforts. The Martin Scholars Program was implemented in January 2012 and is funded by the Felix E. Martin, Jr. Foundation. During the first 3 semesters (January 2012 - June 2013), there have been 22 students enrolled and 2 graduates. Each participant received a $250 incentive award per semester and the graduates received an additional $250 bonus award.

For the 2013-2014 academic year, the Martin Scholars Program has been expanded to include adult students age 22 or older with at least 30 college credit hours. Eligible students will be paid a $250 stipend each semester that can be used to offset costs of books, supplies, tools, equipment, transportation, childcare, or any other college-related expense. Stipend will be paid after verification that the student has successfully completed the first half of the semester courses. All Martin Scholars program participants will be eligible for the stipend as long as they continue to be successfully enrolled at MCC until graduation or for 5 years (whichever occurs first). The associate degree completion bonus award has been increased from $250 to $400. Students (age 22 or older) with less than 30 college credit will be encouraged to enroll at MCC and will be allowed to enroll in the Martin Scholars program once they have successfully completed 30 credit hours of coursework.

In this role, he is responsible for creating a monthly budget, assisting local chapters, and helping with the planning and organizing of the state conference. Graham stated that he was honored to be elected and will do his best to fulfill the duties to better the organization, himself, and the community. He shared, “I believe I will positively benefit from this position and cannot wait to see what the future holds. I want to personally thank everyone who helped me obtain this position. I know it could not have been possible without prayer, your motivation, time, and assistance.”

As an MCC student pursuing an Associate in Science degree with a business transfer certificate, his interest in business and finances made him a perfect candidate for the state treasurer position. Requirements for the position included experience related to the office, being able to attend monthly meetings, and a plan to advance PBL across the state. The election process involved submission of an application, a letter of recommendation from a local advisor, and an outline of goals that would advance the organization. Graham served as secretary for the local PBL chapter and was responsible for the preparation of meeting agendas and notes. During this time he also served as the chair of the community service committee overseeing the local chapter’s community service projects.

Graham is a 2011 graduate of Muhlenberg County High School where he was active in the music program, playing saxophone in the Marching, Jazz, Pep, and Symphonic bands. He also enjoys being outdoors and fishing. His future plans include transferring to either Kentucky Wesleyan College or Brescia University for completion of a bachelor’s degree.
"Women Who Fought"

In honor of Women's History Month, MCC History Instructor Chandy Melton will be presenting "Women Who Fought" on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, beginning at 12:15 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room/JHG Building on MCC's North Campus.

Register now for Summer & Fall Courses

MCC Announces Fall & Summer Registration Information
Applicants seeking admission into the program are required to:

Complete MCC’s general admission requirements;

Submit letter of application to program director by March 1 for program admission consideration. Upon receipt of the letter of application, each applicant will receive notification of the mandatory pre-admission conference schedule.

Submit official college observation form verifying at least a four-hour observation/work experience in a Radiology Department.

The radiography program prepares students to assume responsibilities and duties of a radiographer. Radiographers are technical assistants to a radiologist—a doctor who specializes in the use of X-rays for diagnostic and therapy purposes. Upon completion of the program, the graduate is eligible to apply to write the examination for registration as a radiographer by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

Radiographers are employed in hospitals, clinics, physician’s offices, administration, education, advanced technology, and government. Graduates of the program may also continue their education with one-year programs in sonography, radiation therapy, vascular, and CT-MRI. The average salary for radiologic technologist throughout the United States is $32,000.

MCC’s Radiography Program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The event is sponsored by Baptist Health Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation and Kenney Orthopedics.

The Amputee Walking School will introduce treatment approaches for improved function and return to a more active lifestyle. Increased strength and flexibility help participants to operate more efficiently and conserve energy. One-on-one opportunities and “hands-on” participation techniques will apply. Professionals in the field of rehabilitative therapy and sports medicine will receive high level training in advanced exercises appropriate for use with clients of all ages to improve ambulating. Five continuing education credits will be awarded.

Presenters will be Dennis Oehler and Todd Schaffhauser. Mr. Oehler become a below-knee amputee at the age of 24, as the result of an automobile accident, just weeks prior to signing a contract to play professional soccer in New York. He would later qualify for the 1988 Paralympics Track and Field Team, where he set the world record in the 100-meter event in 11.73 seconds and won gold medals in the 200- and 400-meter events.

Ms. Schaffhauser became an above-knee amputee at the age of fifteen due to bone cancer. Determined to regain an active lifestyle, he qualified for the Paralympics Track and Field Team and won a gold medal by completing the 100-meter event in a time of 15.77 seconds. In the 1995 World Games, he broke his own world record by running the 100-meter in 14.55 seconds.

PT, PTA, OT, COTA, Athletic Trainers, and all interested healthcare professionals are invited. Amputees of all ages as well as their family members are also encouraged to attend.
