National African American Read-In

African American Read InIn honor of Black History Month, the Humanities Division at MCC is having an African-American Read-In an three different times and locations.

The first Read-In will be hosted by the Library and its staff on Feb. 25 from 12:15pm - 1:00pm in the Loman C. Trover Library.

The second Read-In will be hosted by Eastview Baptist Church on Feb. 25 from 6:00pm - 7:00 pm.

The third Read-In will be hosted by the Muhlenberg campus on Feb. 26 from 12:15pm - 1:00pm in room 109 on the MCC Muhlenberg campus.

All are welcome to attend any and all of the events, and light refreshments will be served.  Participants can come and read a favorite passage from a book, a poem, a part of a speech, or anything written by an African American author, or participants can just come listen to others read passages from favorite African American authors.  This is part of a nation-wide event.  All across the nation, people are hosting African-American Read-Ins to celebrate Black History Month and to encourage literacy. The Read-In has been endorsed by the International Reading Association. Over a million readers of all ethnic groups from the United States, the District of Columbia, the West Indies, African countries, and more have participated. The goal is to make the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities.  After the event, I will be filling out a report card to mail into the NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) to let them know about our participation.   This is the NCTE’s Twenty-Fifth National African American Read-In, and I am happy to have MCC and the community be a part of this!
