Students are preferably placed in a job within their field of study according to job skills and work experience. Students are given a career assessment and provided career counseling to help them decide what career goal is best for them.
Work study placements can be either on-campus or off-campus. On-campus placements are limited and are shared with the Federal Work Study program. Off-campus placements are within the non-profit sector and private-sector alike.

After completing the enrollment process, an interview is scheduled at an agreed upon workplace with the Work Study Supervisor on site. This is an actual interview and should be considered as such by the student, thus he/she should be appropriately dressed for an interview. Once the interview has been completed, it is determined whether the student is an appropriate match for the work study position. If not, an interview with another placement is scheduled.
The Ready to Work program pays the participant federal minimum wage for 20 hours per week to meet K-TAP work requirements.
As a student worker in the Ready to Work program, students are paid by KCTCS. KCTCS issues payroll by electronic direct deposit into the student’s savings or checking account. Student workers may print their own paycheck information from the employee self-service feature.
Potential student workers must first pass a criminal background check. Once this is received, students must complete payroll forms that are required by the Human Resources department. The Ready to Work coordinator will help you with all of the necessary paperwork.
Students must be enrolled in at least one (1) KCTCS class. Preferably, students will be enrolled in at least two (2) classes in order to make steady progress toward earning their degree. The Ready to Work coordinator and the student’s academic advisor will work closely with the student to set up a class schedule that is right for them.
