The Jump Start Early College Program, established in 2004, has been the major general education dual credit program at Madisonville Community College. Through the Jump Start program, high school students can earn dual credit in general education classes offered on the MCC North Campus in Madisonville, the Muhlenberg Campus, and at the Crittenden Ed Tech Center in Marion.
The admissions requirements for the Jump Start program are rigorous. Students must be seniors with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better (or a 2.5 or better with the senior counselor’s recommendation). Students must also meet placement score requirements on the ACT or Compass examinations for many classes.
The Jump Start program offers students an extraordinarily diverse and rich number of academic options which they may choose from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.
Unlike career and technical education dual credit which has limited portability outside the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, general education classes taken through the Jump Start program will transfer under the state’s transfer agreement with Kentucky colleges and universities.
MCC waives tuition for the first Jump Start class, but a non-refundable $50 statewide dual credit charge applies to all Jump Start classes. Students taking additional Jump Start classes are assessed half of the standard college tuition rate. Jump Start students should establish their college email accounts and make these payments as soon as they are notified by the MCC Business Office about paying the charge.
