Placement Tests

Placement tests assess your skills in reading, writing, and math and are a requirement for first-time admission at MCC. You should do your best on these tests since the results are used to place you in the proper course for academic success. The ACT, the ASSET, or the COMPASS test scores are required for placement. You must have ACT English, reading, and math scores of at least 18 to register for college-level courses at MCC. If not, you are required to take the COMPASS or ASSET test.

The ACT is a national test offered at MCC’s North Campus on specific dates in October, February and June and on specific dates at MCC’s Muhlenberg Campus in February and April. The test covers English, reading, math, and science with an optional writing component. You can bring a basic four-function calculator to use on the math section. You can register online and find information about cost and other testing sites at http://www.actstudent.org/regist/index.html.

The COMPASS test is a computerized test. It covers reading, writing and math. A computer tutorial is available if you are not experienced with computers. A calculator is included. Students are not timed and will receive the test scores immediately. The first COMPASS test is free. If you have taken the COMPASS test within the past five years, you will be charged $10.00 per section to retake individual sections or $20.00 to retake the entire test.

The ASSET test is the paper and pencil version of the COMPASS test. You are allowed to bring a basic four-function calculator to use on the algebra section of the test. The test is timed and scores are mailed to you.
The COMPASS and ASSET tests are administered weekly by appointment.
